Chinese Evergreen

The Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema species and cultivars) is one of the most useful plants available. You find it in offices, restaurants, malls, and other commercial establishments, but it’s also a great option for the home. Its popularity stems from its tolerance for dry air, lower light, and general neglect, as well as for its beauty. The attractive bushy habit is matched by pretty leaf variegation from its many cultivars.

Aglaonema do well in lower light as well as in bright, avoiding direct mid-day to afternoon sun. Allow soil to dry moderately and provide good drainage. Protect it from cold, as it prefers temperatures above 65ºF. While the flower is not particularly attractive, it does show the plant’s relationship to other aroids such as the Peace lily and Philodendron. In fact, snipping off the flowers before they can open allows the plant to put more energy into producing the attractive leaves for a bushier appearance.
