Orchids are the largest, and most highly evolved, family of blooming plants in the world. They come in many sizes, shapes, and colors. While some are difficult to grow, many others can easily flourish on a windowsill.
Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, and Oncidium are some of the easiest orchids for growing in your home. While all three types of orchids are readily available, the Phalaenopsis or “Moth Orchid” has become extremely popular over the past few years. Phalaenopsis flowers are long lasting, very showy, and their large, paddle-shaped leaves are not unattractive even when out of bloom. With adequate light and correct watering and fertilizing regimens, most species in these genera will happily bloom for you year after year. Some orchids may also require higher humidity or a night-time drop in temperature to encourage flowering.
Whatever type of orchid you wish to grow, there is a great thrill when you see a new flower stalk appear and slowly develop from small bud stage to beautiful open flowers.
