AGASTACHE – ALSO KNOWN AS “HUMMINGBIRD MINT”

So much is going on with perennials in June. The Perennial Plant Association has designated June as Perennial Gardening Month. The main reason for June being selected as the perennial month is that June is a great month for seeing so many beautiful perennials in bloom. Secondly, June is a great month for planting perennials.

June is also recognized as Pollinator Month. And, in Virginia, Governor Northam has tagged the week of June 17 – 23 as Virginia Pollinator Week.

So, with all of this wonderful attention to perennials, I have decided to highlight Agastache.

AGASTACHE

In general, Agastache is a hardy, perennial plant. It is just coming into flower. It is considered to be drought tolerant. Because of the fragrance of the leaves, it is deer resistant. Agastache is in the Hyssop family of herbs and makes a flavorful tea. It requires to be planted in the sun with well-drained soil. Growing Agastache attracts beautiful pollinators such as butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Other characteristics of Agastache are that it is good for container gardening, low maintenance, and good for cut flower arrangements.

Come see us. We have a good selection of assorted varieties of Agastache at this time.

Also, we have made shopping for native perennials and pollinator plants easy for you. We have a designated display table that we keep full of beautiful perennials. I love seeing so many customers becoming more supportive of gardening with native plants and pollinators.

Besides Agastache, here is a shortlist of other assorted perennials that you can plant this month and help support our pollinators:

  • Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly Weed)
  • Baptisia
  • Eupatorium
  • Coreopsis
  • Eutrochium (Joe-Pye-weed)
  • Rudbeckia
  • Nepeta (catmint)

We have been bringing in a new stock of perennials weekly. You need to come to see our selection.
